16th July 2009

The National teams are now starting their competitions.

The Great Britain U20s tournament
starts today in Skopje, Macedonia
featuring ex-shark Nigel Van Oostrum (pictured right).
Their first game is against Norway tonight, 7pm our time.
You can follow all the games live here:

"It’s amazing to watch the stats float by live, but it is
pretty nerve-wrecking." comments a follower of the team.

The U18 final squad will be named after this weekend, but Dan James and Will Hall have been doing well in the preparations and are hopeful of representing England in Sarajevo; the tournament starts July 23rd. Last weekend, they participated in the Future Stars tournament in Kingston, playing against Spain, Poland, and the Richmond Select team. A report and pictures can be found here:

John Stewart and Devon van Oostrum have already been named to the England U16 European squad. Their tournament starts August 6 in Porto, Portugal. They will play in a four-nation tournament (with Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) this weekend in Sittard, the Netherlands.

Disappointment today as the Yorkshire U17 team did not win their Pool B games in the Inter-Regional tournament. This means that they have not qualified for the top 8 playoff deciders tomorrow and instead face a round robin against the Pool A and Pool C third place teams. The Yorkshire matches are at 11am and 1.30pm. For information, the semi finals are at 10.45 am with the final at 2.15pm.

SHARKS FEATURE IN YORKSHIRE U17 SQUAD THIS WEEKEND

Great news as George Brownell, Josh Adams. Jim Rose, Anton Smith and Lewis Francis-Edge all make it to the Yorkshire squad for this weekend’s tournament at EIS in Sheffield. Also Callum McKenzie and Atif Khan have made it as reserves

They have 2 matches tomorrow at 10.30am and 5.30pm so if you can make it there to support both them and Yorkshire, please do so and add to the White Rose roar!

We feel that the team will feature in the honours when the final games are played on Sunday. If you can’t make it on Saturday we will let you know what games are being played on Sunday.

Congratulations and well done from all at the Junior Sharks.

8th July 2009

A notice for those who have been attending the U13's trials at All Saints on Saturdays: the U13 trial session for this Saturday will be at Springs Leisure Centre from 9 - 11 am and NOT at All Saints 10 - 12 as previous weeks? The Springs address is East Bank Road Sheffield S2 2AL (part of Springs Academy school).

6th July 2009

We've borrowed the Barnsley club report from Saturday. It can be found here. Obviously it is from the Barnsley perspective, but we've added the scorers from the Sharks U13 match to it. Many thanks to players and supporters who made the journey.

4th July 2009

Both the U13s and U15s from 08-09 season played friendlies against the U14 and U16 Barnsley teams today. It was a good chance for all of the squad to get court time and the depth and quality shone as the U13s won 86-60 and the U15s recorded a 98-38 victory. Well done and thanks to our hosts Barnsley, who made this a finale to their season, we were pleased to be part of it.

More summer match news

Basketball never sleeps. If you're not going to Leicester (see 23rd June post) then the first date for your diaries is a friendly for the 09-10 U14 squad. Aiming to go one better next year and become national champions, they have a pre-season friendly against Barnsley at Foulstone School this Saturday 4th July 11am tip.

The next date is weekend 11th and 12th July as the U17 Inter-Regional Tournaments 2009 is played at EIS. Ten regions take place and we know that the Sharks will feature in the Yorkshire squad. We’ll have a feature when there is more news.

Next, get your mates together for the first ever 4 on 4 tournament for U16s and U18s again at EIS. This is taking place on Saturday 22 August 2009 (Under-16) and Sunday 23 August 2009 (Under-18). Each team should be accompanied by a responsible adult, so we’ll be on the lookout! Click here for EB site

As well as all this keep an eye on the U16 and U18 adventures in Europe in July/August featuring Sharks players.

A great chance to let everyone one know that Yorkshire and especially Sheffield is at the heart of English basketball, we look forward to seeing you over the summer

Another great achievement as Dan James joins up with his team mate. Following the England U18 camp at Loughborough on Saturday, Dan was selected along with Will Hall to play in two games on Sunday. The first was against a Derby Div 1 and Div 3 select, and the second against Wales U18s. Dan played well in both, collecting an enormous dunk on three incoming defending players in the first game. Will Hall top scored in both games, and both Dan and Will have been selected for a 5 day camp in Belgium from next weekend. All our best to both of them.

23rd June 2009

We’ve just had news of an exciting basketball event taking place in the Leicester area at the beginning of July at the Braunstone Leisure Centre. This is in aid of the Special Olympics taking place in Leicester later this year..

There are a lot of Sheffield connections including Peter Scantlebury playing in the Charity All Star Game as well as England U16s playing a few games (against the Dutch so there may be split loyalties for some!). It all takes place 3rd, 4th and 5th July.

9th June 2009

The headline news from last night’s AGM is that the Sharks will be without two of their coaches for next season. Michael Talbot the U14s coach turned out statistically to be the best coach during his time with the Sharks. Winning 90% of the games he coached, he also won a national championship when coaching the U15s. Michael’s comments on leaving were “to thank everyone for the support in making my time here as enjoyable as it was, from my peers to my players, the parents and volunteers. Junior Sharks have a great development program and I was proud to be a part of it”

Meanwhile Duco Van Oostrum also stood down. Again a national championship winner and Sureshot cup winner, rumour has it he may be spending time following a certain Spanish club.

Re-elected chairman of the club, Dave Ransom, commented in the Chairman’s report “The entire club looks forward to both coaches returning to the bench for Sharks in the near future.” as well as issuing a personal thanks to both on behalf of the club.

6th June 2009

A group of U13/U14 players and
supporters braved the harsh weather
today as the players valiantly
completed the Rother Valley
Triathlon. Rumour has it that the
youngest came second in their age
group; this will be confirmed early
next week. In the meantime for all
those that sponsored them, here they
are at the finishing line. Many thanks
to those who supported and made
pledges and well done to the lads.
More photos of this gruelling event
can be found on this slideshow which
is on our flickr site.

4th June 2009

The Junior Sharks AGM takes place at All Saints on 9th June at 6.30pm.

3rd June 2009

Some of the U13s and U14s are taking part in the Rother Valley Triathlon on Saturday (Event 2). Tip Off (or Run Off or Wave Off! - sorry don't know Triathlon speak) is at 10.30am. Hope it goes well and I'm sure we'll have a report if the fitness levels of the Sharks challenge the other athletes.

30th May 2009

U18s info:  Hardly time to catch your breath as preparations for next season start. The U18s have a pre season practice at Springs on Saturday June 6th at 3.00pm and then at EIS on Thursday June 11th at 6.00pm. The intention is for these to become the regular practice slots. This information has been sent out to the squad via email and we are letting you here as a further reminder.

Anyone who has not been informed, or is not yet part of the Sharks set up; please use the “Want to play for us?” button to get in touch.
