A good build up to the start of the new season as after many of the U15s and other juniors supported former junior Shark Joseph Baugh make his BBL last night. The U15s then warmed up for their season by beating Solent Kestrels 69-43 before winning against Northants 97-42. Solent beat Northants 71-46 in the other match. Many thanks to the visiting teams especially for the great spirit in which the games were played and we wish you all the best with your season.

Barnsley Leaders (last years U16s) Vs Sheffield Sharks (this years U16)
Well done to the Sheffield Sharks U16s with a convincing win against the Barnsley Leaders. The Barnsley Leaders last year Under 16s hosted our current U16s to a friendly match as part of their season ending award ceremony which took place at half time. Our Junior Sharks U16s roster consisted of the 5 Sharks returning from last year U15s team and 4 new additions. While Barnsley put up a fight the Sharks were too strong winning easily 69-40. The Sharks discovered their form early putting some distance in the first quarter play ending Sharks 22 to Barnsley 7. The Sharks managed to win all 4 quarters but did discover a few areas needing work. The Sharks U16s were missing a few from the squad in Saturdays friendly but the 9 that took the court showed promise for the coming season. (Nathan Smith (#5), Tom North (#6) 10pts, Wesley Skaines (#7) 6pts, Dennis Kaka (#8) 25pts, Najee Kamil (11) 4pts, Lemar Darien-Campbell (#12) 7pts, Tommy Price (#13) 10pts, Mateus Michalak (#14), Dale Stennet (#15) 7pts

Sharks Hooked by England U18s
Current Sheffield Juniors Sharks’ player John Stewart and ex-Shark Devon Van Oostrum have now received formal notification that they are to take their places in the England U18 team for the upcoming European Championships to take place in Tel Aviv, Israel later this month. Both players who have featured in preparations during the year return from intensive training and two friendlies in Belgium this week to take part in The Future Stars Tournament that is to take place in Kingston upon Thames on July 9th, 10th and 11th. England U18s are pooled to play against Poland and Croatia on July 9th before the placement games over the following two days where they may play France and Sweden. The boys will have little time for rest after Kingston as they must return to the London area for a final training camp in Epsom just two days before boarding an early morning Heathrow flight to Tel Aviv. Devon and John will be in Israel from July 20th to August 2nd. Their Group C pool games in Division B includes competition against Israel, Denmark, Romania and Belarus. The EB website suggests that the coaches have gifted the Sheffielders with the same playing numbers that they have worn for England for the last two years.
An interview with Devon and his family about his first year abroad can also be found here,
Back British Basketball
You may have seen the banner at on the site and we ask that you click on it and find out more about the campaign to swell the support for the British Team in the lead up to the Olympics. One Shark's coach says " I confess that I was disappointed with the turnouts two summers ago for the previous qualifiers" so let's "organise the club to attend at least one game en masse". The 14th August game has been put forward as a target and there has been the offer of a mini bus. We understand individual teams are looking at their various options so players and supporters please get involved and try and get to a match. In a few years time it may be the current Shark's players who are after your support! Back British Basketball!
